Proven Survival Skills

ISR is not just about teaching children to swim; it’s about teaching them to survive. Our program focuses on:

  • Self-Rescue Techniques: ISR lessons teach your baby how to roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe, which can be critical if they ever find themselves in water unsupervised.

  • Personalized Instruction: Each child receives one-on-one attention from a certified ISR instructor, ensuring that lessons are tailored to their unique needs, abilities, and learning pace.

The Skills We Teach

Roll Back to Float

Infants 6-12 Months Old (pre-walkers)

Generally speaking, children ages 6 months to 1 year learn the ISR Self-Rescue skill of rolling onto their backs to float, rest, and breathe. They learn to maintain this position until help arrives.

Swim - Float - Swim

Children 1-6 Years Old

Older, more mobile children will learn the full ISR Self-Rescue sequence of swimming until they need air, rolling onto their back to float, then flipping back over to continue swimming. ISR students are taught to repeat this sequence until they reach the safety of the steps, the side of the pool, or the shoreline.

Meet the Instructor

Hi, I’m Heather, a San Diego-based mom, artist, and certified ISR instructor. I live here with my husband and our two young children, and like many parents, water safety became a top priority for me once I had kids.

Before coming to ISR, I spent two decades as an artist, working in both woodworking and ceramics, and have run my own ceramics business for the last ten years. I also taught woodworking for a number of years, and I've always found purpose in helping others learn hands-on skills.

My journey into ISR instruction began after enrolling my son in ISR lessons two years in a row — first as a floater, and then to learn swim-float-swim. Watching his confidence grow and knowing that he had the skills to keep himself safer in the water made a lasting impression on me. That experience inspired me to become an instructor myself—so I could share those same life-saving benefits with other families.

I'm passionate about helping children develop not just water survival skills, but also the confidence that comes with them. I look forward to working with you and your child!
